Outrunning It
After a friend died, I found myself racing another friend — a woman — across the whole of the country. The race made no sense, and neither did the geography: the map kept refolding itself, distances lying easily, towns arriving in the wrong order. We ran for nine days before the grief finally wore itself down to nothing and the race just stopped mattering.
